Installation frustration

Yesterday was a frustrating day that I spent trying to install openSUSE 12.1 rc1 (release candidate 1).  The frustration was partly because of how I was changing my own setup, and partly because rc1 is not yet ready for prime time.

Once you get it installed, 12.1 is mostly good.  Getting it installed is the hard part.  I’ll have several posts about 12.1, but that can wait till I have a bit more testing time.

The quick advice I have is this – if you want to install rc1, then use the live CD (live KDE or live gnome).  The DVD installer is broken.  If have already downloaded the iso for the DVD, and still want to give it a try, then accept all of the defaults for software (except the initial choice of desktop).  If you try to go into the software selection system, you will likely have an install failure.
